Greek Gods and Goddesses: Facts About Artemis

Here are some facts about the Ancient Greek Goddess Artemis.

  • Artemis was the Moon Goddess, responsible for the movement of the Moon across the night sky.
  • She was a huntress and was the protector of animals and young children.
  • Artemis never married.
  • She was incredibly independent and hated anyone interfering in her business.
  • She liked to hike across the mountains and roam the woodlands with her band of nymphs and her three hunting dogs.
  • Artemis carried a silver bow and arrows and she herself appeared to be silver like moonlight.
  • She moved the Moon in a chariot pulled by stags.
  • Artemis never missed with her bow and she also had healing powers. She used these to heal Aeneas, a great warrior, during the Trojan War.
  • Actaeon, a hunter, was caught spying on Artemis when she was bathing. As a punishment, Artemis turned him into a stag and set his own hunting dogs after him. He was tracked down and killed.
